Dr. George Perry Speaks on Alzheimers and UTSA's Tier I Progress
Submitted by sacadmin on Thu, 2010-05-13 09:19.The San Antonio Council for the Cooperation of Engineering and Scientific Societies (SACCESS) would like to invite you to join us for a talk by Dr. George Perry, Dean of the College of Sciences at UTSA. The event will be held from 6-8 pm, the evening of Tuesday, May 18. Dr. Perry’s presentation will start at 6:30 pm.
Dr. Perry, one of the world’s top researchers in Alzheimer’s Disease, will present some of his latest results in how this disease develops and its physiological consequences. He will also provide us with an update on UTSA’s progress towards becoming a Tier I University. A short bio for Dr. Perry is provided with the attached meeting announcement.
The talk will be given in the foyer of the Biotechnology Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Building at UTSA’s 1604 campus.
AIAA Celebrates "Centennial of Military Flight"
Submitted by sacadmin on Thu, 2010-02-25 21:02.March 2nd marks 100 years since the first military flight took place here in San Antonio at Ft. Sam Houston. There are numerous events taking place to commemorate this event and the AIAA Southwest Texas Section is coordinating one of these events. Please plan to join us on Tuesday, March 2nd, from 5:30-8pm in the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) lower-level auditorium. Dr. Tom Crouch, Senior Curator at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, will give a presentation on the Wright Brothers and early aviation including the first military flight at Ft. Sam. Jim Brazell will open the evening with a short presentation on the numerous aviation firsts which took place in the Alamo City. Sandwiches and hors d’oeuvres will be provided along with water, tea, and assorted sodas.
SACCESS Founder Dr. Juhasz Honored with Painting
Submitted by sacadmin on Thu, 2010-01-07 23:08.Local artist Nancy Clapp honored SACCESS Founder Dr. Stephen Juhasz with a portrait which depicts him mentoring students in geometry at the San Antonio Virtual Interactive Geometry (SAVIG) Lab at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Dr. Juhasz founded the lab in 2005 which provides students with instruction and hands-on demonstrations of everyday uses of geometry.
County Judge Nelson Wolff was on hand to congratulate Dr. Juhasz. To honor Judge Wolff for his success in promoting the growth of the local science and technology community, SACCESS awarded him two copies of "Historic Photos of San Antonio" personally signed by the author Frank Faulkner of the San Antonio Public Library.

2010 Annual Tech Forum

Registration begins at 5:30 PM with Panel Sessions at 6:00 PM & Refreshments / Networking at 7:00 PM. The theme of this public outreach event is Collaborative Technology Commercialization and will showcase the collaborative roles and responsibilities of the universities in local and state technology-based economic development. A diverse audience is expected comprising academic and industrial researchers, small business leaders and start-up entrepreneurs, state and local government officials, business service providers, investors, and others interested in regional technology transfer and economic development. Local media is invited to participate.
TSPE E-Week 2010

Tickets and sponsorships are available for numerous activities including the Engineer of the Year Banquet and Scholarship Fundraiser. The banquet caps a week's worth of engineering activities and this year we are adding a Casino Night. We are looking for general sponsors for the events, table sponsors and prize sponsors. Volunteers Needed - Texas Institute for Educational Robotics

This fall San Antonio will host its inaugural FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition on November 22, 2009 at the Witte Museum. We especially need judges for this event. Judges should have a technical or scientific background in order to judge the students robots and presentations.
Summer Speaker Series: Near-Earth Objects

Dr. Walker, one of the country's most renowned researchers in the area of impact modeling, spells out our planet’s long-term survival in the violent realities of space. This meeting will be held at the Panda restaurant at Loop 410 @ Ingram Rd with an available buffet. We meet in the private dining room which is to the left when you walk in. Here is a map link:

Energy Efficiency Workshops: Laredo (Feb 17), Brownsville (Feb 19)
Submitted by sacadmin on Wed, 2009-01-28 08:33.The University of Texas at Austin Center for Energy and Environmental Resources and the University of Texas at San Antonio is conducting two 1-day workshops on identifying energy efficient opportunities in publicly owned facilities. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is the sponsor through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The target audience is municipal and school district officials in Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas.
We are looking for individuals and organizations who might be interested in speaking at one or both of the workshops. Please find attached the flyers advertising the events and the workshop agenda. Energy Options Series Event: Renewable Energy
Submitted by sacadmin on Fri, 2009-01-09 23:23.This special topic event was held on Thursday Jan 22, 2009 from 6 to 8:30 pm. It was held at the Pearl Stables at 312 Pearl Parkway. Mr. Dan Rastler, Energy Storage Program Manager at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), discussed the current state-of-the-art in energy storage systems specifically designed to capture and efficiently mass distribute renewable energy. Mr. Mike Kotara, CPS Energy’s Executive Vice President of Energy Development, followed up by explaining where renewables fit within the CPS Strategic Energy Plan. As with our last Energy Options Series meeting, Mr. Michael Harris moderated the Question & Answer sessions after the presentations. At the outset, Mr. John Bonnin, CPS Energy Manager of Wholesale Power Marketing, presented an overview of the current renewable energy landscape.
